Signs From the Universe or Just a Coincidence? How to Practice Spiritual Discernment

I believe that many things we call coincidences are clear signs of spiritual movement in our lives. A single event may pass unnoticed. But when something happens again and again, especially at meaningful moments, I pause. I ask myself what this pattern is inviting me to see.

Imagine that you receive your best job interviews in August. Year after year, you apply for positions at different times, yet August is when doors seem to open. You could dismiss that as a coincidence. I would pay attention. To me, a recurring date can reveal a personal cycle, even an astral cycle: a period when your energy, readiness, and opportunities seem to meet.

That does not mean you should wait until August to send an application. It means you can observe the rhythm of your life and work with it. A sign becomes useful when it helps you act with greater awareness.

The same thing can happen with people. Perhaps you meet someone unexpectedly, then cross paths with them several more times. At first, it seems amusing. By the fourth encounter, you wonder whether there is something to learn from this connection. Sometimes there is. But the lesson may be friendship, collaboration, or a new way of seeing yourself. A repeated encounter is an invitation to pay attention, not a promise about what the relationship must become.

Shared tastes can also carry meaning. You meet someone who loves the same music, books, places, or spiritual practices you do. Suddenly, a conversation opens that you could not have planned. Our minds and spirits recognize connections, and those connections can guide us toward people and experiences that help us grow. I do not think every shared preference has a hidden message. I do think it is worth noticing when a connection arrives at just the right time and leads somewhere meaningful.

In my spiritual practice and in conversations with clients, I have learned to consider three things: repetition, timing, and the feeling surrounding an experience. Does the pattern return without my trying to manufacture it? Does it appear when I am facing a real question? And what happens inside me when I notice it?

For me, intuition often feels quiet and clear, even when its message is surprising. Wishful thinking tends to feel urgent. It keeps asking for reassurance and turns every small detail into proof of the answer I already want. If I desperately want a particular person to call, for instance, I may begin to treat every song or number as confirmation that they will. At that point, I step back. I ask whether the sign is helping me understand my situation or simply helping me avoid an uncomfortable truth.

You can ask the universe for a sign. I sometimes do. But I try to ask with openness: “Help me see what I need to understand,” rather than “Show me that the decision I have already made is right.” Then I give myself room to observe. A genuine synchronicity does not need constant checking to remain meaningful.

This is why spiritual discernment matters. Being attentive to signs and synchronicities should make us more present in our lives, not more anxious. If looking for signs leaves you unable to choose, rest, or trust your own judgment, take a break from searching. Return to what you know, what you feel, and what is actually happening. Guidance can illuminate a decision, but you are still the one who must make it.

I think of synchronicities as rudders for a boat. A rudder helps us navigate; it does not row for us. The August interviews may encourage you to prepare for that season. Repeated meetings may encourage an honest conversation. Shared interests may encourage you to explore a new community. In each case, you remain free to decide what to do next.

A meaningful coincidence does not always tell us where we will end up. Often, its purpose is to move us toward a better place than the one we are in now by helping us recognize an opening. We can welcome that guidance without becoming obsessed with explaining every event. We can stay curious, grounded, and responsible for our choices.

To me, a coincidence is an illuminated synchronicity: a light placed on a recurring experience so that we can reflect and decide where we want to go from there.

Explore how timing, intuition, and recurring patterns can offer guidance without taking over your decisions.
Can a Psychic help me to discerne what is going on?
A psychic can always help you identify what that coincidence points to.
How do I know if something is a sign from the universe or a coincidence?
Notice whether it repeats, arrives at a meaningful time, and helps you see a choice more clearly. You do not need absolute certainty to learn from it.
What is the difference between a synchronicity and a coincidence?
I use synchronicity for a coincidence that feels personally meaningful. Its value lies in what it helps you understand and how you respond.
